someone's doing it - My Secret World by The Golden Dawn; Gentle Tuesday by

These were not his best lyrics, for sure, but they were ok
Lawrence sometimes thought that writing lyrics is poetry -but it's not!
His best lyrics I think were in the last lp 'me & a monkey...'. they were quite
simple.

what exactly "should" pop songs be about? so if there are specific topics
that pop music is limited to then wouldn't there again be the problem of
them being "the kind of lyrics done a thousand times". i've heard thousand
of dorky pop songs about love but i've never heard any about oral sex while
wearing dentures except from denim.
sounds like a really dull musical world if we start saying what pop songs
should be about...
and it's very presumptuous of you to assume that such lyrics can be dashed
out quickly. it may take longer than you think. i find the lyrics quite
interesting and well thought out. look at "concil houses" or "job centre",
both songs that are amusing but make pretty interesting social commentary.
you practically need a degree in urban studies to understand all the
references in "council houses". not necessarily "quik & trash".

probably don't need a degree at all if you are british and get the
references, parochial, but the universal is in the particular as the cliche
goes.
Saying that the best lyrics were on felts last lp sums it up, maybe lawrence
felt he cracked it and wanted to do something else, stupid and lazy and
greedy is such a great two fingers to work ethic corporate britain, it
pisses all over a 1000 self righteous crusty levellers songs in getting the
point across

Hi!
I still wonder if the Submarines who disapeared after one beautiful 7" for
Head Records "Grey skies blue/I saw the children" later formed as Compass
Flow and released an album on Glass Records. My questions: Has anyone ever
seen this album or does anybody have demos/live tracks from this outfit?
Uwe Weigmann from Firestation told me that this album appears in all his
lists, but I don`t know if they`re official catalogues.
Thanky for any help.

They were both dead pop, but The Orchids had a much
dreamier sort of sound and later on drifted into electronic
sounds and stuff (in a nice way); whereas the Urchins
always sounded more solid and tangible and went a bit rock
later on. They became Delta, who are really boring, and are
still doing the rounds here in Birmingham.
What i really wanted to know was does anyone know what The
Orchids did when Sarah called it a day? (Oooh, they *were*
good at the Sarah100 do...brings shivers to my spine just
thinking about it.)
Oh, and this is my first post to the list, so hello

One of the least qualified on this list to answer, but there's a very
nice track by Diganoise (hate the name! - James something or other of
the Orchids presumably in the driver's seat with a couple Swedes in
tow) on Labrador's "Sleeping Single" split. Other bands (Céleste,
Acid House Kings, Martin Thulin) are all ace, despite my ever more
blunted appreciation for the AHK. But back to Diganoise: think
female fronted soft pop, semi dancey, the direction that Striving for
the Lazy Perfection was going in. Suitable for St. Etienne fans, and
always bringing one or two strangers up to the booth when I've played
it on nights out.

The 'Nervous, London' ep sounds a bit Field Mice, with
echoes of Galaxie 500 on the lead track; apparently the
more recent stuff *still* sounds a bit Field Mice but a bit
Pet Shop Boys with it.

If you ask me the Orchids earlier Sarah stuff was
magical when compared to the Sea Urchins, many songs
off Lyceum spring to mind.
While we're on the subject of various sea urchins
people...
Didn't I hear that one of The Sea Urchins later formed
Pram who are an electronic kinda band - also still
doing the rounds in Birmingham but I havent had chance
to check them out yet.
Dunc :)

On seeing this, I just had to mention that Pram's latest album, 'The Museum
of Imaginary Animals', is probably the best thing I've heard this year.
Kinda like a more twee Stereolab I'd say. I don't rate their older stuff
though, from the clips I've heard on the internet (I think they've been
going about 10 years, so they've done quite a few albums).

my two cents...
i don;t think there's any sea urchins/pram connection.
and i like the middle pram stuff (sargasso sea/stars are so big) a
whole lot. a nice combination of dreamy atmospherics and twisted
dubbed-out grooveology.
my question is: what ever happened to the golden dawn??

Best thing they've done for my money is the 'Music for your
movies' ep. Ethereal and kitsch at the same time, great
tunes, and absorbing arrangements. Living in Birmingham
does have its consolations, and Pram are one. They're
wonderful live.

Did they go the same was as George Hamilton? :)

Hiya,
Just a little tidbit that will hopefully put a smile on some of your faces.
I pulled out my old the wake record "make it loud"on.. last night and had
the pleasure of listening to the track "firestone tyres"... filled it up in
a filthy garage I was using firestone tyres...drove away to another country
where the roads all look the same...aaaa. Bye for now, Sile

heaven records sometime soon. it's stuff that was recorded ages and ages

tulips feet.

What? For reals? Heaven Records is not only still going, but putting out a
Golden Dawn 7"? That's the best news I've heard all year! This better not
be a joke...We here in the East SF Bay Area get pretty serious about our
Golden Dawn. :)

heaven records are indeed still going! yell at mattie j. via
heavenrecords@--hidden--.
sheggi lives in burton joyce's sister city, new york, where she contributes
to the military-industrial complex.
musically, she's been collaborating with the brilliant nottingham band,
lorna, who've done a six minute version of the melons "from hell to
helsinki." (look for lorna at http://startrip.freeserve.co.uk)
paul lives in london and is a teacher!

oh it's times like this that i wish i wasn't 1500 miles away from my record
collection
the sleeve says SARAH RIP on the back & one side of the label has the SARAH
flowers design with HEAVEN in the boxes instead of SARAH....Still making
sense?
i think it says somewhere that the songs were from the early 90's. I will
check though....if anyone cares!
all this golden dawn chatter has got me in the mood to watch my old
transmission video with the georgie porgie's dead video! i think its a funny
clip, but Victor Hernandez cried tears of true joy upon viewing. By the time
he'd seen the popguns/heavenly/orchids clips we had to scoop him off the
floor..............
Later

So, here's a very quick update to let you know that there are many
LE GRAND MAGISTERY events planned for CMJ. I can't get into the final
details just yet (although by this weekend everything should
be figured out), but I will at least tell you the days, so that some
of you can try and make your trip to NYC correspond with these dates:
Le Grand Magistery related events will take place:
Wednesday, October 18 (this is actually the night before CMJ starts)
Friday, October 20 (in the early afternoon)
Saturday, October 21 (in the day and in the night)
Sunday, October 22 (in the night)
So mark your calendars, talk to your travel agent, and get ready to join
Le Grand Magistery and our artists and friends who will be performing:
-A Girl Called Eddy
-Baxendale
-Elkie Somersault
-Flare
-Milano
-Momus
-My Life Story
-Stars
-Toog
-Mr. Wright
Specific details to follow...

I remember seeing the 'My Secret World' video on Transmission, or was it
Rockin' In The UK then. Fantastic. I have a six hour video somewhere of
Rockin' In The UK, Transmission and Snub TV. Also features Alan McGee with
the big hair and shades!
PS does NOBODY have any info on The Boy Hairdressers/Pretty Flowers/Faith
Healers?
.
more info: http://www.twee.net/shalala/
The Boy Hairdressers had done one fine 12" called Golden Showers. It was
released in 1987 on 53rd and 3rd. The band members were Norman Blake,
Francis McDonald and Raymond McGinley, all three later formed Teenage
Fanclub. Also involded were Joe McAlinden, later fame of Groovy Little
Numbers, BMX-Bandits and now in Superstar.
You can find two more songs by The Boy Hairdressers on the B-Side of the
first Teenage Fanclub 7", which was called "Everythings Flows".
I must honestly say that i never heard of the pretty flowers. I only
remembers a band called the pink flowers.

Can we assume you were talking about the Trembling Blue Stars
session? I missed it on the web because I was taking a long nap after
an early flight. I don't know how good the session was, but the new
Trembling Blue Stars album is great (as are the other two) and they
all stack up better than For Keeps for me. But song-for-song it might
be a different story... I'm also very fond of Cody, although I seem
to be in the minority on this count. They're not very pop-sounding
really so maybe that's where the problem lies.

Tried to post this yesterday but it bounced 'cause I have a new email

Wonder whether Andy's general disillusion w/ Shinkansen nowadays isn't
really disillusion w/ Bob Wratten? I didn't _mind_ Broken by Whispers but

Hello,
I have Billy Mackenzie's Beyond the Sun and it's one of the best records I've
ever listened to. The sad songs on it are so beautiful... I'd like to know if
there are any of his or The Associates old records that sound like
"Beyond...". Mackenzie & Haig is also very good but is not what I was
expecting after listening to Beyond The Sun.
Also, there's a double cd compilation by The Associates out with some old
demos on it. For someone like me who doesn't have any of their records,
should I still buy it?
BTW, it's the first time I post a message here.
Thanks,
Erico

RE : The Boy Hairdressers : Sorry to confuse things further, But Norman
Blake was also in The Clouds during the 80's - Not sure whether it was after
The Boy Hairdressers or before or during.
I checked the Golden Dawn single on Heaven - the front features Paul & Aggi
giving the 'forks' & the back has their feet. not too sure of the
significance!
The 2 songs on the 7 were also available on compilations : No Reason Why on:
Airspace II - The Sequel (LP)and Luminous on: And They Call It Pop (K7) on
Fragrant (thanks to tweenet).
Tweenet also list the following track by the GD
Chase My Blues Away on and Fire on : Everlasting Happiness (K7) and
The Sun Never Shines on: The Velvet Dawn Flexi (FLX) on Raving Pop Blast!
Records (1989)
Does anyone have these tracks & if so are they worth me begging you to tape
them for me!
Paul.
p.s I'm considering making some 'Esurient For Change' t-shirts. However the
minimum order is 25 shirts & I don't have that many friends 8-( so if anyone
is interested in joining me in celebrating one of the best labels of the
80's/90's, get in touch (the cost would be a paltry $10 plus
shipping)....sorry if this contravenes list rules!

Healers?

I suppose if you want to be all completist, one could also add that the Boy
Hairdressers' track "The Assumption as an Elevator" also appeared on a Shelter
compilation and on the 53rd & 3rd compilation Fun While it Lasted. What a
wonderful song it is! "I wanna sleeeep with you I waaant to take you
hooommmee" (please correct me if I've been mishearing these lyrics all these
years) It's kinda got a sound as drunk as I was when I met Raymond McGinley a
few years back. A nicer popstar I could never hope to meet, pretty surprised
that I knew who the Boy Hairdressers were too! I remember talking a lot about
Scott Walker with him. A very nice guy.
yours,
N.

For what's it worth,
seing that The Jedrzej Dmochowski Appreciation Society is now a public
mailing list not restricted to a chosen few and that a couple of recent
threads actually renewed my interest in this forum, Ithought I might as well
contribute once again after a year of lurkdom.
I. The Television Personalities Website
http://www.popfloor.com/tvps/
II. The Jazz Butcher Website
http://www.jazzbutcher.com/
III. The Revolving Paint Dream / Biff Bang Pow!
My humble approach on partly solving the relative mystery that was The
Revolving Paint Dream can still be found in the archives ...
http://www.twee.net/shalala/199903/msg00011.html
To the best of my memory, Andrew Innes and Christine Wanless are also
credited on the sleeve of the second Biff Bang Pow! LP, _The Girl That Runs
The Beat Hotel_. Fair enough considering that "Someone Stole My Wheels",
"The Happiest Girl In The World" and "If I Die" are basically Revolving
Paint Dream songs. In fact, the cancelled second Revolving Paint Dream 7"
sheduled for September '84 (!) was supposed to feature both "Wheels On My
Scooter" (= "Someone Stole My Wheels") and "Sunny Days" in exactly the same
versions that appeared a couple of years later on the "Someone Stole My
Wheels" 7"/12" under the moniker of J.C. Brouchard With Biff Bang Pow!. More
recently I learned from David Musker (The Televison Personalities / Jasmine
Minks / Slaughter Joe) that he also played on a fair share of Revolving
Paint Dream recordings.
Besides, is anyone in the possession of the demos by Christine's other band
at the time, The Formica Tops (who were also supposed to release a single on
Creation Records back in the early days) ? Only thought I'd ask again now
that the number of subscribers has increased considerably, I'd love a copy
of said recordings (and any unissued stuff by The Revolving Paint Dream, for
that matter).
IV. The Pretty Flowers / The Boy Hairdressers / The Clouds
The Pretty Flowers preceded The BMX Bandits and featured Duglas T. Stewart,
Sean Dickson (The BMX Bandits / The Soup Dragons / High Fidelity), Norman
Blake (The BMX Bandits / The Boy Hairdressers / The Clouds / Teenage Fanclub
/ The Famous Monsters) and Duglas' early muse Frances McKee (The Vaselines /
Suckle). A couple of lines on the history of the short-lived combo can be
found in the liner notes of "The 53rd & 3rd Years" retrospective LP/CD by
The BMX Bandits. In fact, songs like "E 102" and "Strawberry Sunday" were
old songs by The Pretty Flowers. After Frances broke Duglas' heart by
running off with Eugene Kelly (The Vaselines / Captain America / Eugenius),
Duglas, Norman and Sean continued as The BMX Bandits with Jim McCulloch, Joe
McAlinden (The Boy Hairdressers / The Groovy Little Numbers / Superstar) and
Francis MacDonald (who played in numerous other Glaswegian bands, most
notably The Boy Hairdressers, Teenage Fanclub and The Pastels).
The Boy Hairdressers was the delightful and humorous side project of Norman,
Joe and Francis which also featured Raymond McGinley (Teenage Fanclub) and
Jim Lambie. In short, The Boy Hairdressers was an early incarnation of
Teenage Fanclub. Unfortunately they only released the much sought after
"Golden Shower" b/w "Tidalwave" c/w "The Assumption As An Elevator" 12"
(UK/53rd & 3rd Records AGARR 12T/1987). As was already mentioned, "The
Assumption As An Elevator" can also be found on the less scarce _Another
Ideal Guesthouse_ LP and the _Fun While It Lasted_ CD. It might well be that
"Primary Education" and "Speedster" from the "Everything Flows" debut 7" by
Teenage Fanclub were originally recorded as demos for The Boy Hairdressers
during a later stage of their existence, but those songs are certainly no
indication of what can be expected from the marvellous "Golden Showers" 12".
It is accurate that Norman Blake was in The Clouds, but The Charnley
Brothers (who are not exactly held in high regard in Glasgow from what I've
heard) chose not to credit him for the contribution in the studio (guitar
and background vocals). I witnessed a decent live show by one of the
subsequent bands of The Charnley Brothers in Glasgow back in 1994, but I
doubt they released a record under the moniker at the time.
IV. The Sea Urchins / Delta
The Sea Urchins were my favourite Sarah Records band and I strongly
encourage anyone without a copy to trace down the _Stardust_ retrospective
LP/CD and the "Recorded 30.10.88" 7". I'd also like to mention that, in my
humble opinion, Delta is certainly worth a listen. Songs such as "Tonight"
and "Take Away My Pain" from the "Gun" CDs are amongst the most beloved
melancholic ballads in my record collection and pretty much in the vein of
the "Recorded 30.10.88" 7" by The Sea Urchins. It seems that the debut album
by Delta is imminent for release, let's hope it is more consistent than the
_Laughing Mostly_ CD.
V. The Golden Dawn / The Catalysts / Meth O.D.
>The Golden Dawn - Luminous 7"
>
>The 2 songs on the 7" were also available on compilations :
>No Reason Why on: Airspace II - The Sequel (LP) and
>Luminous on: And They Call It Pop (K7) on Fragrant
>(thanks to tweenet).
Unfortunately I haven't obtained my copy of the "Luminous" 7" from Heaven
Records yet, but I trust that the flipside features the full version of "No
Reason Why" rather than the "edited" (read: fucked up) version that can be
found on the _Airspace II_ LP.
>>Tweenet also lists the following track by the GD
>>Chase My Blues Away on and Fire on : Everlasting Happiness (K7)
>>and The Sun Never Shines on: The Velvet Dawn Flexi (FLX) on Raving
>>Pop Blast! Records (1989)
"Chase My Blues Away" and "Fire" are my favourite songs by The Golden Dawn,
that's why they were featured on my humble "Everlasting Happiness"
compilation-tape. "The Sun Never Shines" is a poor recording of a decent
song which was featured on the flexi without the consent of The Golden Dawn
(unless you count in the consent of a former bass player).
I happen to know this kind of trivia because singer and songwriter Robert
Smith was a penfriend back in the day, last I heard *from* Robert personally
(owing the simultaneous move of house) in 1992 was that he founded a band
called Sed-ee-ment. Funnily enough, that's not the last I heard *about* and
saw *of* Robert. During my Glaswegian studies back in 1994/95 I was
introduced to a fellow in King Tut's Wah Wah Hut by a common acquaintance.
The fellow asked about my motivations for studying in Glasgow, which were
naturally my musical preferences. Following the enquiry about bands I named
the usual suspects and finally added The Golden Dawn. After catching his
breath with excitement that I even knew The Golden Dawn and the fact that
they hailed from Glasgow, the fellow made himself known as Kenneth "Kennie"
Norrie, formerly guitarist of The Golden Dawn and Christine's Cat (a side
project of The Golden Dawn who only issued the flexi on Sarah Records).
Unfortunately Kennie hadn't been in touch with Robert for a long time, but
he knew that Robert played in a band called Meth O. D. - coincidentally, I
attended a (passable) Meth O. D. live show only a couple of days prior to
that night. And as if the world wasn't small enough, the acquaintance who
introduced me to Kennie that night is by now the most appreciated Glaswegian
P!O!P! songwriter since Donovan. The offspring of that night is a complete
collection of recordings by The Golden Dawn as well as extremely lovely and
jangly demos by one of Kennie's other bands at the time, The Catalysts. A
couple of years later I saw releases by Meth O. D. in a record catalogue and
naturally placed an order, but while it was the same band I'm afraid to say
that their music is certainly not my cup of tea, which is a pity considering
my fondness for The Golden Dawn.

despite getting involved with a fight with them, hating the whiney vocals
and getting rid of my sea urchins singles, they are actually a band that I
have reassessed and rather miss now musically. Sorry have to totally dismiss
your opinion of delta and I guess I'm not the only one, Delta were dull dull
dull alt pub country, in stark contrast to the youthful/minimal pop
intensity of clingfilm on the sea urchins kvatch flexi
I have some boy hairdressers demos, the songs were mentioned in various are
you scared to get happys, they are superb and its such a pity that they
didnt get a release. If you have ever heard a band called the mayfields
trolling around in the late eighties, that gives a sort of clue to the
sound, but without the annoying 3rd rate tweeness, in other words, it had a
great guitar and glockenspiel link up

I spent a lonely day in Hull waiting for the Sea Urchins to play the Adelphi
way back when. I sat at the table next to them and I still feel stupid for
not gathering enough courage to just walk up and say 'hi, I came all the way
But I didn't.
But too this dayt I still force Aerospace to play 'more like the Sea
Urchins' and 'none of that Harvest Ministers-isms'. The Sea Urchins were the
toughest band alive in my world back then. And they still are.

Ah, but they would dress up as John's Children & play 'Desdemona', & they
also covered 'You're Too Much' by the Eyes. So they can be forgiven,
wouldn't you say?

So I've spent the better part of today listening to "Go With Yourself (The
Fingertip Sessions Vol. II) by Brave Captain aka Martin Carr of the Boo
Radleys. After the first two tracks that I don't think cut it, the rest of
the album is a wonderful pastiche of sound of color. Tracks like "Where Is
My Head" have an ace "Pipers At The Gates Of Dawn" kind of Pink Floyd sound
to it and there are these Jon Hassell like trumpets on "Ein Hoff Le" which
make me shiver. "Reuben" maybe the biggest pop hit for Martin since "Wake Up
Boo"!!!
You should all be looking out for this record.

I have a different version of the peter astor song submarine on a creation comp from 1991 titled "American Pensioners on Ecstasy". Can anyone tell me who the female singer on it is? It sounds alot like tracey thorn but i think it's heidi berry.

I'm not sure, but considering how much work he has done with Berry, that
would be my bet...

Miki is supposedly somewhere on the new Moose album, to judge by the liner
notes, though it doesn't say exactly where. She also had a singing part on
one song on the last Rentals album. Other than that, I don't know of
anything she's been doing lately. I don't think she has a new band, though.
Emma from Lush is in a band called Sing-Sing who seem to put out about one
single a year or something like that. Good dance-pop St. Etienne-y kind of
stuff produced by Mark Van Hoen.
